SINGING AND MUSIC

"The musical tradition of the Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art, especially the fact that the sacred song united to words, it is necessary and integral part of the solemn liturgy "(Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, Sacrosantum Concilium, 112).
The composition and singing of inspired psalms, often accompanied by instruments music, are already closely linked to the liturgical celebrations of the Old Covenant. The Church continues and develops this tradition: hobnob "one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart" (Eph 5:19). "He who sings prays twice" (St. Augustine, in Enarratio Psalmos, 72, 1).

Song and music fulfill their function as signs in a manner all the more significant the more closely united to the liturgy (Vatican Ecumenical Council, Sacrosantum Concilium, 112), according to three main criteria: the beauty expressive of prayer, the unanimous participation of the assembly at times be made and the solemn nature of the celebrazione. L'armonia dei segni (canto, musica, parole e azioni) è qui tanto più significativa e feconda quanto più si esprime nella ricchezza culturale propria del Popolo di Dio che celebra (Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, Sacrosantum Concilium, 119).
